Exotic Hibiscus

'Focal Point'

Exotic hibiscus 'Focal Point' does not seem to be very exciting at first glance, but to the eye of a hybridizer, it has something very, very special in the hibiscus world - a yellow eye! The elusive yellow eye! We have spent years, decades, trying to hybridize flowers with yellow eyes. We hybridized 'Cosmic Gold,' our first with a yellow eye, in 2010, then 'Satsuma,' our second in 2011. Now 11 years later, we FINALLY have our third hybrid with a yellow eye. Yellow eyes seem destined to be a true rarity in the hibiscus world. Hence the intense focus on this new hybrid, 'Focal Point.' Predictably, one of its parents, the pollen parent, is 'Satsuma.' The pod parent is 'Radiant,' a dark orange like 'Focal Point,' but with a white eye. Somehow the genes for the mother's white eye and the father's yellow eye combined to pigment the eye of this new cultivar with yellow - at last! Large 7-8" flower on a medium-sized, upright bush that looks like it may be a vigorous grower, although we rushed this one forward because of the eye, so we're not quite sure yet. Released from HVH in 2022. Hybridizer: C. Black
